Lakeview High won the concert in a contest sponsored by radio station 99.5 WYCD, Detroit’s Country, benefiting Cell Phones for Soldiers. Cell Phones for Soldiers is a non-profit group that collects gently used cell phones, recycles or refurbishes and resells them and uses the funds to purchase 60 minute pre-paid calling cards to send to soldiers serving abroad. This allows soldiers to keep in touch with their families and loved ones.
Between November 21st and December 15st the station collected used cell phones from Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland County area high schools. Lakeview High School was one of the schools collecting the most cell phones during that time and today it was announced that they had won the special private concert. Read this article discussing their efforts.
The concert was originally scheduled for January 19st, but had to be rescheduled to its new date.
The concert is not open to the public. Hopefully, the students still have their new cell phones and will be taking photos and videos from the show to share with the rest of us.
